Ms. Badger's class

Dear Parents,
Please be aware that Ms. Badger's students have home work every night except for Fridays. In addition, assessments are given every Friday.  Students should be reading at home on a daily basis for at least thirty minutes, and they should respond to their reading by using the skill and/or strategy that we are using in the classroom for the week.

Mrs. Van Hise's class:

We are beginning our author study of Roald Dahl.

We have been working on Reading Strategies to help us become better readers. Here are some to use at home.

  1. How to figure out unfamiliar words.

·         sound it out

·         use context clues

·         reading ahead

·         rereading

·         using a dictionary or thesaurus

·         think of the word (break it apart)

·         use a synonym

·         remember where you've seen the word before

2. Make connections from what is unknown to what is known and back to using the information to figure out the unknown. Figure out what we know about the reading topic. Think about what we want to know.

3. Retell and summarize.

4. Ask questions before, during and after reading.

5. Visualize and use other senses to understand the text.

6. Infer. Predict and read to confirm predictions.

7. Determine what's important - main ideas and themes.

8. Synthesize!
