            Fall News

It is hard to believe, but we are already into the second nine weeks. With the newness of first grade behind us, we are charging ahead to success. We have a lot of exciting things that we will be learning.

We will be focusing deeply on reading this nine weeks, specifically on strategies to help us better understand what we read. You can also use these strategies at home. For example:

*Summarize- After you or your child reads a story, talk about it. Ask your child simple questions such as:

Who is/are the character(s)? What did the character(s) do? Why did the character(s) do that? Think about the important parts: What happened at the beginning of the story? The middle? The end?

*Evaluate- After you or your child reads a story, talk about it. Ask your child simple questions such as:

Did you like the story? Why or why not?

Who was your favorite character? Why?

-By asking questions like these, you will help your child think deeper about the characters and what is happening in the story.

We’re looking forward to a great second nine weeks!
