Trekker Talk
Ms. England's message board for parents and students

Congratulations for being the third 7th grade class of Julia Landon.  I get so excited when I think about the amazing things you're going to learn about our world and its people this year.  So, trekker's get ready for an interesting year.
WHAT DO I NEED?
Supply List
MATERIALS LIST:
1- 1", 3ring notebook, white with view pockets on front and spine
4 subject dividers
Mini-drive
pencils, pens-black or blue only
notebook paper.

All students will want to make sure you have the necessary materials the first day of school.  We start the year at full speed the first week so your notebook with dividers are a must so you don't start off already behind.

GETTING READY

Do you listen to the news? Are you interested in world affairs? What kind of magazines do you read?  Do you know what NPR is?  Are you curious about what's going on in the world? If so, don't waste any time.  Begin watching CNN, FOX News and listening to NPR for updated on international affairs.  There are events taking place in North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran just to name a few that are serious and will ultimately effect our lives. Listen and learn. Nothing impresses me more than a well informed student.

HELP
SESSIONS

Help Session will be available upon request. I will stay for tutoring only when a student has reserve a date and time with me prior to the session.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to get your year off to a strong start.  However, if student's manage their time appropriately in the classroom there is no need for extra help outside the classroom.
Team Planning  Planning for 7B team is 5B.   If you would like a conference, please contact Mrs. Cameron, ext. 114, in the Guidance Office.
LESSON PLANS AND STUDENT CENTER Time management and organization is an acquired skill for some of us.  There are many systems in place to assist students with this skill.  Student's taking advantage of the resources (student center) and tools (lesson plans in the classroom and on the web) provided for them will see success in this area and will have the grades to prove it.

Notebooks
—Notebook turned in after the due date and without an exception or extension, will earn a grade a 60/D.  Students earning an F on their notebook may re-do or turn in missing assignments on a date determined by the teacher and receive a grade no higher than 60/D.
Written Projects—written assignments may be recycled for 100% credit only after the student has conferences with the teacher to discuss areas for improvement.  A due date will be established by the teacher within the quarter it was assigned.

Julia Landon Leadership Corps teams up with the Florida Army National Guard for 1st Quarter

The seventh grade Julia Landon Lions have teamed up with the Army National Guard for their first quarter Leadership in the Community outreach project.  The guards “Youth Leader” program will introduce students to the principles of military leadership.  Youth Leader offers student’s inquiry based instruction focused on guided discovery with corresponding activities that relate directly to the leadership values.  Through group discussion and experiential activities, students will connect these values to our middle school focus on leadership and the Covey Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.

ROCKWALL RELEASE OF LIABILITY FORM

Student's must return the rock wall release form to their Social Studies teacher by Thursday, Sept. 24.  Please make sure student name and the period of their WG class is printed on the form for easy recognition.   The kids are having a great time and learning a lot about Leadership and how to apply it in their every day situations. Check out our Leadership page soon for photos.

SPECIAL PURPOSE MAP PROJECTS
The grades for this project will not be included in the upcoming progress report.  If a students project grade negatively effects their grade, I will send home a scholarship warning.

Second quarter is the beginning of the process for History Fair.  We will start discussing the theme: Innovation in History: Impact and Change in the classroom within the next two weeks and students will choose their area of focus for their project.  Please reserve this date, Dec. 8 at 6:00, for History Fair Parent Night.  The event will be hosted be the Social Studies Department and held in the Julia Landon auditorium from 6:00-7:00.  I know you will find the information session valuable.  If you have questions prior to our information night, please refer to History Fair on this website or you can go to www.nhd.org

The first assignment for the process timeline is T.B.A.  Students should have their topic chosen with four areas of interest about the topic (sub-topics) and a pack of index cards.  Each student should have also chosen one of five categories they plan to work in and have a print out of the timeline for that category.  Each timeline is different as the rules for each category are different.  Points for each assignment within the timeline will be tracked on this worksheet and will ultimately add up to a possible 100 points for a completion grade.  If the worksheet is lost between now and the due date the points are lost along with it.  I have given students the opportunity to have their timeline with my sign-offs and points in their portfolio in the classroom.  Please help your child be aware of the due dates on the Timeline worksheet to earn the maximum number of points for each assignment.  These dates are also highlighted in the classroom as well.  Thank you for your support.  We can't do it without you.
