Jane Condon: Champion of the Arts and Education

Jane Condon speaks with LaVilla students about the founding of their school. Jane Condon has been involved with education for over forty-three years.  She was the principal of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts for ten years. She was also principal of LaVilla School of the Arts (LaSOTA) for three years.  Mrs. Condon opened LaSOTA and was instrumental in the creation of the school,  but none of this came without a struggle.  When the school was still being planned, there was dispute over the land that LASOTA was to be built on. City Council didn’t think it was fit to build a school on this property because of its inner city location.  Ms. Condon called local residents and rallied support for building a school of the arts in historic LaVilla.  The battle was won in favor of the school and LaVilla School of the Arts was opened in the fall of 2000.

Ritz Theatre and LaVilla Museum

Why was it important for our school to be built in this area? Mrs. Condon explained it to LaVilla students in this way:

The LaVilla area has always been full of entertainment and the arts.  It was originally an African American and Jewish society.  It was where African Americans could find good jobs and enjoy entertainment safely.  That is a reason why the idea of an arts school was good for this part of town.  This area was so big and well known, that it was considered LaVilla, Florida. Some people even called it the Harlem of the South It started in the 1920’s during the Harlem Renaissance in New York.  African Americans played a huge role in the growth of jazz, especially in this area.  It was, and still is, a vibrant, alive, creative area. Years ago The Ritz Theater and LaVilla Museum was old and broken down, but locals raised money and restored the historical theater.  Today it has great historical value and preserves local African American history in its excellent museum. Jacksonville residents enjoy a variety of events and programs at the Ritz Theatre.
