Before Brown vs. Board of Education the schools were segregated by race . Black children attended black schools and white children attended white schools. In the black schools they were given old run down books, but the white schools were given new books in nicer classrooms. The Jim Crow laws enforced segregation. The Jim Crow laws were enforced in the south. African Americans knew that a good education was necessary. And that's why they fought for their children to get one. A great example is Ruby Bridges. Ruby Bridges is an inspiration to all African American people because she went to an all white segregated school in Tylertown Mississippi. At first none of the white kids would come to the William Frantz school but slowly they returned. And they all became friends showing that whites and blacks could get along and that changed schools for ever! All though there is always going to be racism in school, it will never be at the state it was from 1895- 1963. Today in 2005 all races get along in school. And here's a good quote to always live by: "Don't judge us by the color of our skin but the content of our character." By Martin Luther King. This page written by: Tyler Lawrence |
