The civil rights movement was an important time that changed the lives of all Americans. Writers made it possible to bring words and emotions to voices and events that were often silenced. we cant forget what happened no mater how hard we try. Writers of the civil rights movement. managed to get the point across, piece of cake. Some important writers include Stetson Kennedy, Lorraine Hansberry, Richard Wright, Alex Haley, and many more important people, journalists and playwrights who documented the harsh times of the 1950's to the 1970's. |

A Raisin in the sun: Lorraine HAnsberry Lorraine Hansberry (1930- 1965) became the youngest American playwright at 29 years old. Lorraine Hansberry was the fifth woman and the only African American woman to win the New York Drama critic's circle award. Lorraine died at age 34 from cancer. A Raisin in the Sun was produced in 1959. It tells the audience a story of a African American family struggling to survive in Chicago. A Raisin in the Sun just happens to be the first play written by an African American woman. This was shown to a Caucasian audience. This play recently closed a run on Broadway. This recent show was the first to appear on Broadway since the original production in 1959. |

STETSON KENNEDY Born in Jacksonville Florida 1916. Kennedy has a passion for Folklore. His career expands over 6 decades. He spent most of his life fighting for human rights. "Kennedy may well go down as the first investigative historian," according to StetsonKennedy.com. Kennedy has written about and been written on, seen things and had things seen. A book of interest from Stetson Kennedy's collection includes Jim Crow: The Way it Was. On Wednesday, April 6th, 2005 Kennedy was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in Tallahassee Florida.

Alexander (Murray Palmer) Haley August 11, 1921 Alex Haley was born in Ithaca to a Simon and Bertha. Haley is well known for his book Roots. In Roots Haley traces back to his ancestry back into Africa. This book has been transformed into a television series and interest in genealogy, specifically that of African - Americans. Roots has gained "critical and popular success" |

Cheryl and Hardy Brown, " Give voices to those who have been silenced." The Black Voice News paper is a news paper for African American people to voice their ways of reason. The Black voice news is currently being published in Riverside California. The Black Voice News was founded by college students in 1972 in riverside Cheryl Brown is an award winning journalist and Hardy Brown is a former manager of a health organization and a formally elected school board member. Langston Hughes
Langston was born in Joplin Missouri when he Graduated from central high school in 1920, he went on to Columbia University. Weary blues was his first book and in was published in 1926.
