First Grade NewsAttention Parents of 2009-2010 First Graders!!!
First Grade News We are more than halfway through the school year! Your child should be reading on Level F or above to be on target. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of reading nightly with your child and completing all homework. It is beneficial for the parents to go over the homework with your child, too. Attendance daily and being at school on time is also very important! Important Reminders: We will begin Report Writing in February. In this type of writing, children present a series of facts about a topic. First graders most often write about what they know. They will find one or two new facts about a familiar topic and organize them into a report. We are working on this step-by-step in class. In Math, we will continue to work on addition & subtraction facts and begin to try to memorize our facts. In Reading, we will continue to work on comprehension skills including making predictions, inferring, main idea, drawing conclusions, comparing/contrasting, classifying and categorizing information. Make sure you are listening to your child read aloud each day for at least 20 minutes. After they read, close the book and have them retell the story from their memory. Don't forget to have your child work on Destination Success at home. There are many Math, Reading, Social Studies and Science activities available on the Internet based site. If you have forgotten how to log on from home, check out our Lone Star website or send your child's teacher a note. Thank you for
your continued support!!! First Grade Teachers
