Third Grade News

Welcome to the third grade at Lone Star.  Here are some suggestions for having a successful year in third grade.

Read 20 minutes each night and discuss what you read with someone.  Try reading books from different genres such as mysteries, biographies, nonfiction, poetry, and chapter books.  Be sure to keep the RAH log updated.

Drill the addition and subtraction facts.  Third grade students should have these facts memorized and begin learning multiplication facts (1-10).  They are expected to have these memorized by the end of the year.

Be aware of the law for third grade.  In addition to the regular requirements for passing third grade, any third grader who does not meet the minimum standard for reading as set by the State will be retained.

In buying clothes, please consider that students are running track each day.  Tennis shoes and appropriate clothing are highly encouraged.  Make sure all shoes have a back and no flip flops may be worn to school.  All shirts must be tucked in at all times, so purchase clothing that accommodates this rule.

Students may not wear baggy pants.  Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than the fingertips as the arms hang from the shoulders.  Belts are expected if the garment has belt loops.  Please comply with these rules and expectations.

Homework will be assigned each school night and should always be returned to school on the due date. Planners should be initialed daily and progress reports signed and returned.

Please let us know ahead of time if you are picking your child up early.  Remember that assessments are usually given on Fridays so try to limit early dismissals on Fridays.

Please remember to read and drill math facts over our holiday breaks. We also need students to come to school with their supplies ( pencils, paper, agendas, and homework folders). Also when visiting your child's class, be sure to stop by the front office for a classroom pass.

We continue to look forward to working with you this year.
