With first quarter under our belt, we are
getting settled into our routines and looking forward to future
accomplishments in the upcoming nine weeks. Second Quarter brings
several extracurricular activities, including our PTA Program and
first Field Trip to the Museum of Science and History!
To continue success in Reading, please have
your child read each night and log their reading entries. Remember,
students should be completing Reading summaries to turn in to
his/her classroom teacher. Ask your children to share the elements
of the story they are reading with you or a sibling.
In writing, we are moving into the persuasive
writing genre. Students must be able to convince their audience to
follow their opinions. A sample topic might be: Explain why students
should (or should not) be required to wear uniforms to school. You
can help your child by helping him/her provide justification or
reasoning for their point-of-view.
In Math, we continue to work with multi-digit
multiplication strategies. At this point, students should have their
basic multiplication facts memorized. A sample multiplication
problem might look like 137 x 42: Students need to be able to solve
problems in a variety of ways. We will move into our fractions,
decimals, and percents unit immediately after Thanksgiving Break.
Look for activities or textbooks to come home for additional
practice opportunities.
In Science, we will move on to matter. Students
will be measuring and comparing properties of matter, and will be
investigating properties of water and magnets. In Social Studies,
students will continue to explore ancient Florida civilizations, and
will learn Florida’s changing role as it moves from a territory to a
state.
We encourage regular attendance and
participation in school. Students that attend every day of school
will earn a weekly chance to win a new bicycle in December. We thank
you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Fourth Grade Teachers
