Mandarin Middle Safety Net & Special Programs      HOME PAGE
Safety net programs at Mandarin Middle School are designed to enhance opportunities for students' academic success by providing additional educational services to ensure that students remain on track.  Services are provided through a variety of programs that help eliminate the achievement gap among students, increase the promotional rate, help students recover failing grades, and accelerate grade level placement.

Before & After School Math Program

This program is designed for Level 1 and Level 2 Math students.  Students receive the basic arithmetic skills that they lack using the Knowing Mathematics Curriculum.  Students also use Compass Odyssey to develop in specific areas of FCAT strand deficiencies.

Intensive Reading Program

This program is a district initiative and is state mandated.  All Level 1 reading students receive a ninety minute block of instruction in reading.  Teachers utilize the Read 180 program to deliver instruction.  Read 180 is built on more than two decades of scientifically based research and the collaboration of reading experts.  Read 180 is designed to break the cycle of failure, accelerate instruction, and allow struggling readers to experience success.

Standards Based Promotion Program

This program is designed to increase academic achievement and accelerate grade level placement for over-aged students.  Sixth and seventh grade students are able to accelerate their placement and attain a more grade/age-appropriate level of placement at the end of the year.  The educational process is personalized in order to increase the probability of success and ensure preparedness for high school.

Grade Recovery

This program is designed to help students recover failing grades.  If a student earns an “F” in a core subject during any grading period, he or she can attend Grade Recovery.  Students are removed from their PE or elective class for a length of time, no longer than four weeks, to remediate the grade.  During this time, students report to the Compass Odyssey Lab to engage in interactive computer lessons to assist with the recovery process.  A student’s grade may be raised as high as a “C” if the work meets the standard.

Team Up Program

This program is designed to improve the promotion rate, FCAT scores and school attendance.  Students attend Team Up two times a week (Tuesday and Thursday).  During this time, they are grouped according to FCAT scores.  Each day students work on Reading, Language Arts and math to develop the skills needed to improve their academic performance and FCAT scores.  Students also receive homework assistance from a certified teacher.  In addition, time is provided for enrichment and recreation activities.
