Biodiversity Habitat & Study Area Groundbreaking
Saturday, June 4th

After nearly two years of planning and fundraising we will have our official groundbreaking on Saturday, June 4th at 9am. Thanks to the ongoing support of our MECSA PTA, the Surfrider Foundation and their Ocean Friendly Garden program; the Jacksonville Zoo; and The Mission Continues, 1st Service Platoon Jacksonville we will be installing 3 pairs of benches and connecting pathways for study & observation areas, and fencing the perimeter of the habitat.

In July, we will install an approximately 350 square foot wetland/bog complete with appropriate aquatic plants, including Spartina grass raised by our students, as the 1st phase of our biodiversity habitat, The Mission Continues volunteers will also be conducting various campus beautification projects on the 4 th (painting, landscaping, etc).

Over the summer we will continue to raise funds so that by fall we can complete the internal pathway system and begin planting the rest of the habitat area, which will include forest understory, coastal prairie, and dune plantings in their respective zones.

We are looking for adult volunteers to help on Saturday, June 4th, any time from 9am-4pm. We can use additional wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes. We can also use refreshments for our volunteer work crews that day. If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please call or email Kathy Malz (malzk@duvalschools.org, 247-5988 ext. 113) or Dave Karrmann (davekarrman@hotmail.com, 247- 5988 ext. 136) .
