Technology

Technology, here at Merrill Road, encompasses many areas. We have our computer lab up and running with kids delving into a variety of programs. 1st and 2nd graders are working in a program called Kidspiration. They are also using Microsoft Office Word, learning all the tools, so they can write letters, create story maps, and type stories they have written in the classroom. We will be using PowerPoint as well.

The Kindergartners are using a program called Destination Success. This is an awesome program that DCPS has adopted and aligned to all the standards for grades PreK-6th grade. The program can be used from any computer with internet so students can "play" at home. Directions to access Destination Success are below.

Another area of technology is our news studio. We have a group of children that not only work the cameras during live broadcasts, but they are also the Newscasters. These kids read from a teleprompter (they write their own scripts), use a blue screen when giving the weather forecast (just like the news on TV), and even help with some of the technical duties behind the scenes.

Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology is one of the technology standards that we focus on all year long, starting from day one. So, as you talk to your child about using the computer, encourage them to use correct vocabulary (ex: instead of saying "pointer", say "curser").

We will have a guest speaker to open our night of excitement. More info will come out the first of January, so be looking for it in your child's folders!
