Born in
Zachary, Louisiana, Mrs. Janetta Lucas was educated at Northeast High
School. After graduating from high school, she took the risk of
venturing away from home and received her bachelor's degree from Florida
Agricultural & Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida.
Immediately
after graduating from FAMU, she moved to Jacksonville, Florida to begin her
career as a physical education teacher and coach. While coaching at Paxon
Middle School, her teaching career began at the elementary level - Sabal
Palm, S. P. Livingston, and Lone Star Elementary. Two years later she was
employed by Darnell-Cookman Middle School as a teacher and athletic coach.
While at Darnell-Cookman she wrote her first grant ‘No Ifs, Ands, or
Butts’, and also served as the Activities Director and the physical
education department chair.
In addition
to teaching, Mrs. Lucas coordinated several other events such as the
school-wide fund raiser, Wilt Chamberlin’s 3 on 3 Hoop-it-UP, Juvenile
Diabetes walk, Punt Pass and Kick competition, bicycle safety community
ride, and currently volunteers for the Bob Hayes Invitational Track and
Field meet.
After
several years of teaching and coaching, Mrs. Lucas decided to get certified
in educational leadership and obtained her master’s degree from
Jacksonville University. In 2001, Mrs. Lucas became an assistant principal
at William M. Raines High School. She coordinated a mentoring program and
served as a mentor to several students, and mentored a student at
Northwestern Middle School through the CIS ‘Achievers for Life’ program.
Mrs. Lucas is a
firm believer that when high expectations are established, students can
learn if given the time and opportunity. She loves to take risk and
embrace change. Lastly, she has completed her reading endorsement which
will assist her with helping struggling readers.
