Beginning with the freshman class of 2013, Mandarin
will begin offering students entrance into the AVID program. AVID is an
acronym, standing for Advancement Via Individual Determination. More
information can be found through the AVID webpage
www.avid.org.
AVID began in 1980 and has since expanded to almost
half a million active students among forty-eight states and across sixteen
countries. AVID is designed to serve all students, but its focus is on
students “…in the academic middle. The formula is simple—raise expectations
of students, and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to
the challenge…Of the 27,891 AVID graduates in 2011, 91% plan to attend a
post-secondary institution [over half at a 4-year school].”
Any rising freshman who plan on entering Mandarin High
School in the fall of 2012 may apply for the AVID program by contacting
Michelle Wolrich (MHS AVID Coordinator)—
wolrichm@duvalschools.org or Tanu Seymore (AVID Guidance Counselor)—seymoret@duvalschools.org. .
