S.U.N.S. Summer Bridge Program at Mandarin High School 2012

S.U.N.S Program Brochure

 

Dates:              Session 1:  Monday, 6/18 – Thursday, 6/21; 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. daily

*Coursework will be preparation for students who will be taking English I Honors, as well as Geometry (or Algebra II).

Session 2:  Monday, 6/25 – Thursday, 6/28; 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. daily

*Coursework will be preparation for students who will be taking English I Standard, as well as & Algebra I.

Acceptance:   If your child had an application submitted & approved, you should have received a phone call by Thursday, June 14, confirming your admission.  If not, please call the Main Office (260 – 3911) in order to ensure your child’s acceptance status.

 

Please Note:

·         Students will rotate from one teacher to the next during the day.

·         Classes will house no more than 25 students each to optimize one-on-one instruction.

·         Students will have an opportunity to take pictures for their new school ID’s the Thursday of each session.  They will receive their ID’s during their Freshman Orientation.

·         There will be a pizza party for lunch the Thursday of each session.  Each slice of pizza will cost $1.  Please bring your money to Mrs. Abo by Wednesday.  Drinks will be provided.

·         Students will be required to observe the Mandarin High Dress Code while here.  If they are not in dress code, they will be forced to change their clothing.  This means shorts must be within 4 inches of the knee, tank tops are forbidden, & undergarments may not be exposed.

·         Students will be learning during this week.  In order to be prepared, they will need:

o   A spiral notebook

o   A calculator (TI-30X, TI-83, or TI-84 suggested)

o   Writing utensils

o   Reading material for the Reading Skills class

§  “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith for Session 1 (required for English I Honors)

§  “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson for Session 2 (required for English I Standard)

Enrichment Components:

 

  • Reading –

o   Students will complete pre- and post-assessments.

o   Students will work on strategies to improve reading comprehension including dialectical journals for summer reading requirements, pre-AP strategies such as SOAPSTone, FCAT-related strategies for reading nonfiction, and vocabulary development through study of major prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

o   This enrichment course is double blocked as Period 1 & 2, or Period 3 & 4.

o   The reading material for students in Session 1 will be “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith, which is required reading for the 9th grade English I Honors course.

o   The reading material for Session 2 will be “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson, which is required reading for the 9th grade English I Standard course.

  • Writing –

o   Students will develop strategies for FCAT Writes

o   We will focus on analyzing instead of summarizing texts, engaging beginnings, transitional words and phrases, and detail/example development.

  •  Math –

o   Students will be practice skills for entering their future mathematics class.

o   The focus of  Session 1 will be to refine skills from Algebra 1 in preparation for Geometry or Algebra 2, which have required state EOC tests that will be a substantial part of their grade.

o   Session 2’s focus will be to prepare for Algebra 1 by practicing pre-algebraic skills & dispel any misconceptions that may be in place.  The EOC for Algebra 1 is now a pass/fail test for the course.

  • Student Activities –

o   We will be encouraging team building &big brother/big sister relationship building.

o   We will discuss conflict resolution strategies, alcohol and substance abuse, & bullying, etc.
