You Know the Risks…Will You Still Do It?

By Brittany Hougland

Tobacco dates back to the old days when people would chew/smoke tobacco not knowing the harm they cause, but even now with the technology we have people still smoke. They know the risks and yet they still use tobacco. Tobacco is an addiction that most people have problems quitting and it kills a lot of people…and the funny thing is the people who make tobacco don’t even care about your life or any other person’s life; they only care about the money. But then you have to think about the people who smoke. Do they care that they are giving tons of people second hand smoke which also kills tons of lives? And some children even get killed because of smoking, especially when they’re smoking too, with the new flavored tobacco products that are meant to hook children up when they’re young and get them to be a main customer: For Money. The Tobacco Company pays tons of money for advertisements that lie to you, saying if you smoke you’re cool, for guys they tell them they can get any chick they want, but when in fact it kills you. Smoking is a health hazard for everyone on earth and it adds to all the pollution here, and yet people still smoke. The other day at school we had a lady come in and talk to us about tobacco prevention, and she said smoking is like a slow form of suicide because you know the risks and you still smoke. But sometimes certain people need to be pushed to the edge of their comfort zone to realize what they have and decide to live or be under the influence of smoking, so really people make up excuses as to why they do it: because they are depressed, their parents do it, friends do it, they’re pressured to do it, and they have no choice in the matter of smoking or not. In the end it’s really their decision of saying no or saying yes, they have the choice to be above the influence unless someone shoves a tobacco product down their throat. They really can’t blame their friends or whoever forced them to smoke. Many people never really realize what they got until it’s gone but are you willing to risk your life because of what people say or do? Smoking in my opinion is the easy way out of life and real life is not a videogame where you can die and you have like 3 lives left so you don’t make the wrong choice again…but that’s not how it works. People need to realize they only have one life and one shot to make a difference and leave an impression on earth, people won’t think about how cool you were for smoking when you’re dead. In conclusion it all comes down to you: Will you still smoke knowing the risks for the sake of what others say?
