TRYING TO STOP A BEAST

There is monster loose in the world, and its name is sex trafficking. This fiend is very much alive and leaving footsteps on half a million helpless victims each year. These girls are kidnapped and forced to do preposterous acts, their bodies deflowered, and their wills destroyed. Over 31 billion dollars is accumulated from the exploitation of these helpless victims worldwide. Though prevalent in almost every country in the world, one of the main breeding grounds for this atrocity is in the city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  Shackles in the form of red lights, and brothels keep these women repressed, with no hope left, and knowing nothing but bondage and suppression in a world they are sure to drown in.

The youth group of Christ’s Church Mandarin, upon hearing the tale of a sufferer of sex slavery, decided to do all in their power to help.  They were told of a safe haven in Cambodia, hidden away from the violence of the streets, that came to the rescue of these captured girls, giving them emancipation and hope.  The Rapha House currently shelters 61 girls, teaching them useful skills (such as sewing and reading) so that when they make their way back into society, they can flourish without having to fall back into the trap of the sex trade.

Because of our conviction and passion for this cause, a benefit concert christened “Rock for Rapha” was held at the Murray Hill Theater on October 10, 2008.  All ticket sales were donated, as well as the revenue pulled from the vending of t-shirts and bracelets.  The bands in attendance put on an impressive display of their musical talents, blasting their indie rock for the audience of over 200 people, who sent out a thunderous applause of approval. At a short intermission between the shuffling of bands, the crowd was informed of the world of sex trafficking, through an eye-opening film called “Baht.” In the end, the program was a complete success.  Not only did the concert raise awareness about this horrible monster, but in addition over $4000.00 was raised for the awe-inspiring Rapha House.
