Again, I find myself applauding Draper's
books. Copper Sun welcomes a person into the life of a young girl living
on the African plain. She and others are abducted and sold into slavery.
This book takes you around the world from the beauty of her village to
the morbid and dismal life on the boat, then to a sad life as the
playmate for the son of a rich southern farmer. She makes some unlikely
alliances and eventually escapes to a place near Jacksonville. Draper
did an excellent job creating a fiction novel based on actual history.
She ties the book to an actual "safe haven" where slaves could live
without fear under the Spanish rule. While the nature of the book is
sensitive and it is sometimes sad and frustrating to read, you will
learn the importance of the Copper Sun.
