Subject: Grading periods/absenses
Comment: My teachers have told me various things about the 4 days missed subject. Some say that you can miss 4 days per grading period, which is 4 1/2 weeks, and others say that you can miss 4 per 9 weeks. I was just wondering how the principal sees it. Thanks

Editor's Response

The Student Handbook is the source for the official policies of this school.  Here is a quote concerning absences:

ATTENDANCE POLICY

School attendance is the direct responsibility of parents and students.  All students are expected to attend school regularly and to be on time for classes to benefit from the instructional program and to develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline, and responsibility.

During each grading period, the teacher shall notify parents by phone or in writing on or before the third absence of the student from any class period or school day. Within each grading period parents shall be notified in writing upon the fifth absence of the student from any class period or school day to request their cooperation in preventing further absences.

Any student who misses more than (4) four days on a four-by-four block schedule during one grading period must meet both criteria below to be eligible for a passing grade (A-D) in that course:

1.       The student passes the required comprehensive quarter exam or the required comprehensive project in the course. A comprehensive exam or comprehensive project will be given to all students in all courses for each grading period,  and

2.       The student has an overall passing grade in the course for the grading period.

Students who are absent shall receive a grade of O (Zero) for work missed for the day(s) or class period(s) in which the absence(s) occur. Students shall be responsible for making up missed work for each absence. Students shall receive 100% credit for all make-up work for all absences completed within the allotted time, (i.e. a day of make-up work for each day of absence when appropriate, or as determined by the principal.)

Students with unexcused absences shall be held accountable through provisions in the Code of Student Conduct.

Subject: home coming
Comment: are students from other schools aloud to come to the home coming dance?

Editor's Response

We received this response from Homecoming sponsor, Ms. Harkins:

Each MHS student may purchase 2 tickets. They may bring a friend/date from another school. Anyone who attends must follow the Duval County Code for Student Conduct and dress appropriately.

Subject: homecoming
Comment: At home coming are all grade levels alloud to come. Also what is the appropriate ''cloths'' to wear?

Editor's Response

We received this response from Homecoming sponsor, Ms. Harkins:

Yes, 9-12th graders can attend. We don't want 25 year olds there and we don't want middle schoolers there but I realize students may date people a couple years older.

Also, Appropriate dress is anything that is not too revealing or provacative. No hats, no canes. This is not a formal dance like a prom. Church clothes might be a good description.
