Game Reviews
Comment:
I think the game reviews are written good and all, but
it seems like they are all on the same game! Are you going to do some on
non-war games?
Editor's
Response
Actually, we
recently posted a review of Guitar Hero 2 this past week. I
mentioned your letter to the game reviewers, and they suggested you send
us a list of games you would like to see reviewed.

We are
currently working on locations for the administration of the AP exams,
but this link on collegeboard.com lists the dates for the AP tests:
i read the community service page on the website, but i
still have a few questions. could you research them for me? i'm a junior
right now & i have no hours of service at all. i'm about to get started
on them since i'm running out of time, but i'm not really sure how to.
i'm aiming to get at least 75 for the 100% paid bright futures
scholarship. by when do i need to have all of those hours done? and how
do i find out where i can do it? what organizations are looking for comm
service volunteers? id particularly like to do it at a hospital or at a
home for the elderly. how do i find one that needs me? also, the faqs
say i had to turn in the plan sheet by jan 15. why does that matter? can
i turn that in & the log at any time, whenever im finished? thanks in
advance

We obtained
the following information from Ms. Converse in Guidance. Please
see her if you need additional information:
To be evaluated at the end of the 7th
Semester, Community Service Hours should be completed and
the verification log and plan sheet turned in to your guidance
counselor by January 15. Both the verification log and plan sheet
are required by the state and must be entered into the Duval County
School Board data base to be transmitted at the same time as grades
and test scores to the State Department of Education. January 15 is
the date the Duval County School Board students records are
finalized for transmission. Community Service Hours and applications
submitted after this date but before graduation will not be received
in time for early evaluation and will be considered in the final
evaluation during the summer. Verification logs and plans may be
turned in whenever the hours have been completed, whatever grade.
Commendable as it is to want to do
community service in a hospital or nursing home setting, Bright
Futures guidelines require that an organizational setting be
non-profit and not promoting a particular religion (helping with
Sunday school or vaction Bible school won't count). Some good
sources of information and ways to earn hours are our very own Ms.
Raley in the MHS library and Ms. Talley, student
activities coordinator. Charitable functions such as "Race for the
Cure" also use volunteers and are a good source of service hours.
Volunteer Jacksonville may be a source of information about these
kinds of opportunities.

This is a
response to the thoughtful, lengthy letter to the editor that was sent
with the subject "06-07 Revisions". Though your letter seemed
sincere and honest, it contained references to specific persons, and it
is the policy of the MHS website not to post comments that refer to
specific people. However, our principal, Dr. Sisler, has indicated
that she would like the opportunity to respond directly to your concerns
and questions. Please direct your comments to Dr. Sisler's email

"bomb scare"
Comment:
As a freshmen at Mandarin High yesterday during 1st
period as i was about to begin my English exam was interrupted by the
announcement to evacuate the building. Though our class and teacher
thought it was a drill she told us to act as if it were real. Then as
the students filled into the stadium i started to think that this was
REAL. Next Ms. Talley came on the microphone and told us to remain calm
(which actually made more people worry about the situation.) I just
wanted to say what a fantastic job we all did ( except the girl running
across the field and getting arrested) and if this emergency would ever
occur again I know we would do a great job.

We agree with
you that everyone involved; students, faculty, staff and administration
performed like a team during the bomb scare. It is good to know
that the Mandarin family can pull together when called upon.
