The school year is off to a great but busy start!
Several events have already taken place; Open House, Open House Cafe',
Volunteer Orientation, MHS PTSA General Meeting, and Homecoming Ticket
Sales. I want to thank everyone for their time, donations, and
participation in these and many other events. Our school is a success
thanks to all of the support and volunteer hours that our families give
to Mandarin High School.
Due to the budget shortfalls that all schools in
Florida are facing, there have been many changes over the last few
weeks. Elective teachers have had to be surplussed to make room for the
hiring of additional foreign language and core subject teachers. Many of
these changes have taken place due to the restrictions of class size
amendment. While this transition may be a difficult time for your
student, please understand that the school is striving to meet the needs
of all students and their graduation requirements.
There are still several board positions available
on MH PTSA. If you are interested, please contact me for more
information.
Dear Parents, Students, Faculty, and
Community Members:
The ParentTeacher Student Association would like to
welcome you to a new year at Mandarin High! The PTSA is
an active and important participant, and we encourage you to invest in
your high school experience by joining the PTSA.
1.$5 dues = support for PTSAactivities: student $$$ scholarships, 11th
grade vision screening, teacher appreciation, art enrichment through the
Reflections program, programs on issues important to families and
community, and coordinating volunteers needed for activities at the
school.
2.Students are encouraged to become
members - we need your invaluable insight on issues important to you.
Students who join the PTSA can develop leadership skills
by participating on the PTSA board or committees and
demonstrate their community involvement.
3. Donations
welcome: our PTSA operates on a limited budget and tries
not to compete with fund raising activities by student and booster
clubs. We would greatly appreciate your added contribution if you would
like to donate an additional amount to support our scholarship fund,
special project needs, or gift certificates for teacher and student
recognition.
Whether you are a parent, student, faculty member,
relative or community partner, your PTSAmembership
is a vital contribution to our efforts. Please take the time to
complete the membership form below and return to Mandarin High
PTSA by mail, bring to orientation, or send with student to
ANY teacher. We are excited about the upcoming year and look forward
to working with you. Have a great year at Mandarin High!

The PTA Reflections Program was
described by its founder, Mary Lou Anderson, as “almost too simple.”
That simplicity—of asking children to express themselves artistically
based on a common theme—is the foundation of this long-standing PTA
program.
Students submit artwork to their local
PTAs. Works are judged at the local level and the winning entries
advance to the council, district, region, and/or state PTA levels,
depending on the state structure. Top state award–winning entries
advance to the national level of judging. Deadline for all entries
is November 13, 2009. For more detailed information contact Vicki
Lappen at lappenv@duvalshchools.org
and click http://www.ptareflections.org/ for entry forms and guidelines.
Volunteering is always
optional. MH PTSA appreciates all of the great volunteers that have
contributed over 15,000 volunteer hours to Mandarin High School.
Volunteers are always needed for various activities throughout the
school year even if you only have an hour to give. To find an area of
interest for which you can volunteer click and read a brief description
below. If you are interested in helping out or learning more about
volunteering at Mandarin High, please contact Angela Walker at 465-3845.

Mandarin High PTSA has
a rich history and each year continues to add another stepping stone to
our foundation of successful programs for family, school and community.
The primary goals for PTSA are focusing on increased parent outreach
through our programs, increasing legislative involvement and continuing
to maintain and build our membership to make Mandarin High the best
school for our children.
Parents, students,
community and faculty show support simply by joining PTSA every year.
Our PTSA is one of the largest PTSAs in the state of Florida with over
1400 members from which we draw our volunteer base and provides two
thirds of the income for our budget.
Parental support is
vital to the overall success of each individual student as well as the
entire Mandarin school community. PTSA chose parent outreach programs as
a central focus this year to assist parents by providing informative
tools in support of their efforts. PTSA took a holistic approach
providing programs that deal with some of the social challenges facing
teens today. Our Empowering Parents and Internet Safety
programs offered information and discussion about talking and listening
to your children and the threat of predators on the internet.
Our year got off to a
great start when the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, faculty
and staff were recognized by the Duval County School Board as the ONLY
Five Star High School award winner. Now the rest of the district knows
that we are “Nulli Secundus”.
Mandarin High PTSA student and parent volunteers worked side-by-side
during school wide events for 3000+ students. These events include:
August Student Orientation Week, Open House Events, Homecoming week
events and ticket sales, October Red Ribbon Week, November
Beautification Day, February Senior Coves Prom, and March Prom events
and ticket sales.
Communication is the key to increased involvement. Monthly
school newsletter articles, the school marquee, the PTSA bulletin board
and the MHS web site are all used to keep parents up-to-date on events
happening at school. PTSA also provided pertinent legislative updates
and contact information in order to lobby our county, state, and federal
representatives effectively on behalf of our children. The Mandarin
High PTSA and the MHS website team coordinated this unique way for the
Mandarin Community to interact with our school. The community forum
that is open to the entire Mandarin family: parents, teachers, students
and interested observers. We invite everyone to visit the forum to post
comments, questions or suggestions about anything concerning our great
school. The link to the site is:
http://www.duvalschools.org/mhs/communityforum/
To promote unity and support with our school faculty
and staff, PTSA traditionally presents these appreciation events every
year: Welcome Back Membership Luncheon during the first week of
pre-planning, Holiday Desserts in December, and Appreciation Luncheon in
May. We also recognize our Principal, Teacher of the Year, Employee of
the Year, and Volunteers of the Year by inviting them to be our guests
at the DCCPTA Presidents' and Principals' Luncheon.
Through the generosity of community financial and in
kind donations, PTSA continues our focus on building relationships by
event-related appreciation. These events were the yearly school Open
House and the district’s BEACON Volunteer assistance program which helps
prepare seniors to apply for college financial aid. The August Open
House Cafe provided faculty and staff with sandwiches and salad with all
the trimmings; the BEACON Volunteers were treated to Continental
Breakfast & Lunch each day of the 3 day event.
Mandarin High PTSA
board is proud of the active student participation at our monthly
meetings. We also enjoy the attendance of faculty representatives and
MHS administrators at every board meeting. To make PTSA the best it can
be, our board members receive up-to-date information and leadership
training by attending DCCPTA Open Meetings and county workshops. PTSA
attends monthly MHS School Advisory Council to stay abreast of school
activities.
Mandarin High PTSA continues to rise to challenges old and new each
school year. Our Parents, Teachers, Students, and
Administration remain committed to enriching the high school
experience for all of our children.
We are always looking for new faces and fresh ideas. If you interested in
getting more involved in your students high school life let me know we
would love to have you join our team.
The Mandarin
High School PTSA, in coordination with the MHS website, is pleased
to present a unique way for the Mandarin Community to interact with
our school. We have created a forum which is open to the entire
Mandarin family; parents, teachers, students and interested
observers.
We invite
everyone to visit the forum to post comments, questions or
suggestions about anything concerning our great school. The link to
the site is:
http://www.duvalschools.org/mhs/communityforum/
The first time you visit the forum you will need to register as a
member of the forum by clicking the Register link at the top of the
page. For subsequent visits click the Login link to read posts or
make posts of your own. Please read the topic entitled "First Time
on the MHS Community Forum", since it explains rules and
requirements for using the forum.
This forum is
the first of its kind offered on a school website in Duval County,
and we hope you will find it enlightening, entertaining, and useful
in strengthening the bond between our school and our community.
Happy Posting!
