Parents - your help is important to the
success of your student and MHS!!!
Volunteering is always optional. If you have one hour a
school year, a month, a week, or a day there are always opportunities
available for you at Mandarin High School. Please complete the volunteer
survey on the other side of this page if you are interested in volunteering
for any activities at Mandarin High. The PTSA will provide a volunteer
orientation during the first month of school. This will enable you to meet
members of the PTSA board and other MHS volunteers, become familiar with the
DCPS volunteer process, and discuss what opportunities you are interested
in. Look for the dates on the MHS website. Below you will find an overview
of some of the activities the PTSA provides volunteers for. Please feel
free to call or e-mail me with any questions.
Lunchtime Hall Monitors - Volunteers armed
with a walkie-talkie and a friendly face are sent to keep the cafeteria,
courtyard, and surrounding hallways running smoothly during lunches - our
student’s favorite social time! Training will be provided in early August
and throughout the year.
Test Proctors – Proctors assist test administrators with setting up testing
site and ensuring that testing guidelines are being followed. Volunteers are
usually needed for 2 – 4 hours to sit in testing rooms to monitor students
during the test.
Student Activities – Participate in various activities that impact students.
Prom Promise, Fundraising Events, Red Ribbon Week, etc.
Dean’s Office – Assist with paperwork and filing.
Guidance office – Assist with paperwork and filing. The guidance office
needs a lot of support the first few weeks of school. Please let us know as
soon as possible if you are available to assist.
Media Center – Perfect opportunity for the volunteer with little or no
time!! The Media Center is always in need of help shelving and organizing
books. They could also use a dedicated individual to help with monthly
activities and computer input.
Vision Screening – Once per year the PTSA sponsors vision screening for the
entire junior class. Volunteers screen student’s vision with a quick, simple
to use vision screening test.
Teacher Supply Depot – Adult and student volunteers help to literally ‘carry
the load’ of large and small items to the curb for teachers who select
donated items for their classroom.
Bookland – The first week of school, the week before winter break, the week
after winter break, and the week before school is dismissed; help is needed
with the distribution and collection of books.
Staff Appreciation* – Send or bring in baked goods or food items for various
faculty appreciation functions. If you have time available you can also
volunteer to assist with set-up, serving, and or clean-up. This is a great
way to show the MHS faculty your appreciation!
Legislative Lobbying* – Contact local and state legislators regarding issues
that impact our children and schools. Contact can be via e-mail, phone
calls, or in person. Our state legislators need to know what matters most to
parents on education issues and it has never been easier. Sign-up to become
an E-Advocate at www.floridapta.org. Large numbers of e-mails speak loudly
in the capitol—add your voice to make a difference!
Grounds Beautification* – Once per year the PTSA assists with MHS grounds
beautification.

***Important changes to the Duval County volunteer process effective 2005/06
school year. Volunteers are required to complete a Duval County Public
Schools Volunteer Application prior to volunteering at any Duval County
public schools. The application can be completed at any school you volunteer
for and you should list all schools that you would like to be eligible for.
Once completed, this application should be given to a school board employee
or mailed directly to the Duval County Volunteer Coordinator’s office
(envelopes will be provided). The DCPS Community Involvement Office will
mail you a volunteer card that is valid for two years. The PTSA will have
applications available at membership tables and they will be located in the
main office through out the school year.
