HISTORY OF SCHOOL NUMBER 32

MARINE SCIENCE EDUCATION CENTER

The older upper portion of the School now known as the Marine Science Education Center Center was built in 1926-27 to replace an old wooden framed 3-room school house which was located where the newer portion of the Marine Science Education Center now stands. This new brick structure had three or four classrooms for grades 1 through 8. In 1949 to 1950 the lower extension to the building was built to add 4 more classrooms and a lunchroom. School #32 was called Ribault Elementary from 1926 until 1964. It was named for the French explorer, Jean Ribault, who discovered this area in 1562 and claimed it for France.

From 1964 to approximately 1968 this building was used as an annex to Mayport Elementary which was opened in 1964 and supposed to replace Ribault Elementary.

In 1968, school #32 reopened as"Title III ESEA Federal Project" and was called the Marine Science Education Center. In 1971, the Marine Science Education Center once again became school #32 in the Duval County School System (City of Jacksonville) and has remained as such to the present date.

Elementary Program

The Center’s elementary program services fifth grade students in the Duval County Public Schools. Following the completion of an oceanography unit at school, students come to the Center for a day of marine lab and field activities related to the fifth grade science program.

Half the day is spent in labs. Their classroom teacher conducts labs on plankton, conductivity, distillation of seawater, identifying minerals in our local sand, classifying and adaptations of marine animals. The afternoon is spent on the beach studying the dune systems, identifying forms of pollution, and collecting fossils and shells.
