Mattie V. Rutherford is a short term alternative middle school that serves students assigned by the hearing officer based on certain disciplinary and/or academic discrepancies. Students are enrolled for at least 45 days, but may be enrolled longer at the discretion of the principal. Students are only assigned through the district hearing officer. After students are assigned to Mattie V. Rutherford, the student and their parent(s) must attend an orientation. The purpose of orientation is to provide students and their parents a detailed overview of our high academic and behavioral expectations, rituals and routines, and safety procedures. In addition, students and parents are informed of the various resources at their disposal while students are enrolled. While enrolled, students are afforded a holistic educational experience. Every staff member has committed to providing excellent services to students and their families. This experience begins with a district aligned core curriculum, which ensures academic continuity for our students. All students are enrolled in a daily counseling course, which is designed to enhance their interpersonal skills, coping skills, and decision-making skills. A comprehensive behavior management system is a part of our students’ experience. This system is interwoven into our normal routine with daily teacher verification of certain behavioral, academic, and social requirements. Students and their parents have access to a variety of support services while enrolled at Mattie V. Rutherford. Academically, students have access to various software and online applications designed to augment classroom instruction. Parents and students also have home access to several of these services. Students may take advantage of after school tutoring four days a week. Therapeutically, students may be referred to our in-house behaviorist for behavioral interventions. Students who need more intensive therapeutic services may be referred to our full-time psychologist. We also have a part-time social worker who provides additional services to students and their families.
