MicroSociety
This innovative K-8 educational design puts
meaningful work into the experience of childhood. In the MicroSociety
program, children create a microcosm of the real world inside the
classroom. Each child has an important role in running that world.
Student entrepreneurs produce business plans and create goods and
services to sell in the marketplace, judges arbitrate disputes and draft
laws, peacekeepers maintain order in the hallways, and all student
citizens earn wages in the school’s “Micro” currency, invest in product
ideas, deposit and borrow money from “Micro” banks, and pay taxes,
tuition, and rent - on their desks. As students navigate the world
they’ve created, they come to realize the practical applications of
their daily school curriculum and are empowered to take an active role
in their own education. When children see the correlation between
learning and real life, academic achievement rises. When discipline,
traditionally handled by teachers, can be resolved by student consensus,
behavior problems disappear.
