Our History
- Paxon Middle School, the “Home of the Pirates”, is located in the northwest quadrant of Jacksonville, Florida. The school opened in 1956 with three two-story outdoor access wings and a library. The gym, locker rooms, chorus room and band room were completed in 1963. During the 1966-67 school years, another building was constructed to house the special education program. A Guidance Suite was built above the Media Center in 1968. In 1993, another addition was made to the complex. This new building was specially designed to house the EXCEL program for self-contained severely emotionally disturbed (SED) students in special education.
In 2004, a major renovation was completed to accommodate up to 1090 students. Paxon Middle now consists of network of buildings, including the Main Office suites, remodeled Media Center suite with the Television Production studio and Professional Development facility, and a Guidance suite. There are three free standing “house” buildings: 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade. Each building includes an administrative office, increased classroom size and computer access in every room, science lab facilities, and teacher resource rooms.
With the opening of the new buildings in the fall, 2004, Paxon Middle School students, our teachers, administrators, and staff enjoy first class facilities and greater access to technology than ever before. Multiple computer labs have been recently installed to support student achieve and data collection.
