Way of breaking up a large school
to give students the feel of a small school
environment
Smaller schools can more readily
provide students with mentors, tutors, and advisors
Makes learning more meaningful by
linking it to work and community
Provides adequate time and support
for mastery of knowledge and skills
Benefits students, teachers, and
parents by making effective communication easier,
offering opportunities for collaboration, and
encouraging meaningful relationships between
students and adults
Why Small Learning Communities?
Research has consistently shown that
when schools are large, serious problems
arise:
High Dropout Rates
Poor Attendance
School Violence
Less participation in
extracurricular activities
Students feel no connection to the
school
Faculty feel little or no connection
to any area other than their own subject
area
What are Academies?
Academies are subgroups within
schools, organized around particular themes
Allows students to choose
electives in one or more areas that interest
them the most
Students will be able to earn an
emphasis, minor or major in one or more
areas of study
Helps students prepare for their
future career plans while providing them
with goals and a sense of accomplishment

What are Houses?
One part of subdividing our
larger school into smaller schools is
dividing the student and teacher
population into three houses
