Green Champion of the Year - 2010
and Keep Jacksonville Beautful" Award 2010

***URGENT*** GreenState is still soliciting for your old cell phones for recycling and old rags and dawn dish detergent to help with the clean-up of marine birds and mammals due to the catastrophe in the gulf.  Also - we have a paper retriever that can accomodate all paper products (paper, workbooks, magazines, newspaper, junk mail.) We are going to be collecting continuously until there is no more oil threatening the shorelines.  Our first shipment will be going to Sarasota to an organization called Save Our Shorebirds.  Mr. Loughran is carrying the shipment over there during the 4 day weekend we have coming up.  After that, we will collect and store until we have enough to justify another shipment at which time we will send them off to another organization.  We would gladly accept any and all donations at any time that is conveinent for you. Please contact Mr. Sherrill (contact info at bottom of page)

Steve Sherrill, Marine Science and Environmental Science teacher, was recognized as the District's "Green Champion of the Year- 2010" at the Green Champions quarterly meeting. Mr. Sherrill has taken a very proactive part in his quest to make Sandalwood the "greenest" school in Duval County. He has worked diligently with the recycling program of not only the usual papers and plastics, but other items such as old cell phones and ink cartridges. Mr. Sherrill said to the school faculty, "I am not satisfied with this award or our achievments this year.  I hope you all will join me in making even more progress in achieving sustainability.  If you think you would like to help with this endeavor next year, please consider joining the "GrEAT" team".

He is still collecting old cellphones for the Toshiba "March to a Million" campaign to reduce the number of cellphones going to our landfills.  If you, or any of your students, have any that are collecting dust at home, feel free to send them to me in Room 311 or shoot me an email and I'll send someone to pick it/them up from you.

Mr. Sherrill's efforts have also helped Sandalwood be awarded the "Keep Jacksonville Beautiful" award by the City of Jacksonville.  The school will receive a new park bench made from recycled plastic at the Mayor's Environmental Luncheon on May 21st.

Steve Sherrill received the "Keep Jacksonville Beautful" Award from the Keep Jacksonville Jacksonville Commission last Friday at the 19th Annual Mayor's Environmental Luncheon for Sandalwood High School.  Sandalwood was awarded this prize for the many environmental activities that we have sponsored including: Adopt-A-Road around the school premises, monthly clean-up efforts, recycling program, Sandalwood Campus & Community Clean-up, and many more.

The school has been given a certificate which is on display in the main office and will soon have a new park bench made of recycled plastic delivered (final location yet to be determined).

GreenState is still soliciting for your old cell phones for recycling and old rags and dawn dish detergent to help with the clean-up of marine birds and mammals due to the catastrophe in the gulf.  Also- don't forget as you clean your room for the end of year that we have a paper retriever that can accomodate all paper products (paper, workbooks, magazines, newspaper, junk mail.)

If you have any questions about this year's activities or how you can help us exceed this year's accomplishments, please contact Mr. Sherrill.
