Bees arrive at Sandalwood

February 2005

Bees from the family Colletidae arrived at Sandalwood in early February.  These plasterer bees, Colletes thoracicus, have taken over about one forth of the gopher tortoise reserve.  They colonized the sandy area that had little vegetation and have burrowed into the ground.  It is an awesome sight to see the swarm on the ground!  We would like to thank the Florida Department of Agriculture for identifying these bees.
A nice close-up of what appears to be a male with the queen bee. More with the same bee.

These are the flowers that took over the gopher tortoise enclosure that has attracted the bees.   These bees make holes in the ground.
