It’s time to get fit, San Pablo! We are focusing on Physical Fitness across the grade levels in PE for the next month. But getting fit doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t happen at a once-a-week PE class (although, I like to think it helps)! In fact, for elementary children physical activity should be at least 60 minutes of play and exercise everyday! Take a look at the links below for more information and for ideas to get active at home. It will benefit the entire family, I promise! I have also provided important information about Presidential Fitness Award Testing for 3-5 graders. Train at home with your kids!

A note from Coach Gilbert One of the most important topics we teach in PE is physical fitness. Of course, fitness is inherent in all the physical activities in which we participate, but we believe our kids should truly understand what it means to be physically fit. They should be aware of their own level of fitness, set fitness goals, and know what to work on to reach those goals. It’s NEVER to early to take ownership of your personal health and fitness! We are a Health and Fitness magnet school, after all! In the coming months we will be focusing on the five components of physical fitness. They are muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, aerobic capacity, and body composition. For our K-1 students, we are largely introducing these concepts through fun games and activities they can play during recess or at home. Fitness should be fun! 2nd Graders will get a mix of games and an introduction to the Presidential Fitness Award tests, in which they will be assessed over the next six years of PE. 3-5 graders will be learning about the five components of physical fitness largely through the Presidential Fitness Award tests. We are currently recording baseline data for all 3-5 students. We will compare these results with the qualifying standards for the National Fitness Award and the Presidential Fitness Award, and students will create their own fitness goals for each test. We will continue to measure student gains throughout the year, helping students track their progress and meet their fitness goals! Please take the time to look at the PDF files posted in the Home Plays section for more information about physical fitness, qualifying standards for the Fitness Awards, and ideas for reaching fitness goals at home!
