Our Principal -
Ms. Crutchfield
Words from the
principal….
“The
more you read, the better you get at it; the better you get at
it, the more you like it; and the more you like it, the more you
do it”
In a
traditional school program, kids read very little. They spend
most of their time doing activities that are related to
reading-answering questions, filling out worksheets. More actual
reading, especially for our struggling readers, is a must. Not
only are students not reading much at school, but also many
students are not reading at home either. Research indicates that
children who read independently only 14 minutes a day have
increased comprehension, vocabulary and higher test scores. Only
14 minutes of independent reading a day would mean that students
would read 1, 146,000 words per year, which actually exceeds our
million word goal. That would correlate with an achievement
score in the 80th percentile.
We
have launched the Million Word Campaign. We want every child to
read independently for 20 minutes AT HOME. They can read to
themselves, they can read with someone, or they can read to
someone else. Why not read a story to them after they’re tucked
in for bed. Comic books, magazines, newspapers, books, are all
available free of charge at the local library. Does your child
have a library card? Well, they should, and you should have one
to. You are the child’s first and primary teacher. If you don’t
model what you want, then you’re teaching something else. So,
turn off the television set, take off the headphones, put down
the video games, and make them read!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Crutchfield
