The Duval Art Teachers Association Principal of the Year
Since 2002, the Duval Art Teachers Association has recognized an outstanding
principal
who has shown great support for arts education in our schools. This year, the
Association has named LaShawn Streater, principal of Seabreeze Elementary, as
its Principal of the Year. Ms. Streater was nominated by art teacher Emily
Cheek.
In a statement regarding her philosophy on art education, Ms.
Streaters says:
My philosophy of art education directly correlates to my
overall philosophy of education. I sincerely believe that learning is an active
process where students construct new ideas based on their current or past
knowledge. as a result, teachers should encourage students to discover
principles on their own while serving as a guide throughout the process. Art
education gives our students a voice. I would like for my students to view art
resource as more than the time to draw or paint. My goal is for them to embrace
art as their opportunity to respond to the world in their own creative way.
Their creations should be viewed as works of art that are uniquely their own
that would not exist had they not imagined them.

DATA
acts as a forum for which teachers may bring
issues of concern to the front lines. These
issues are further addressed at the
administrative level in our school system as
well as at the state level through the Florida
fine arts Association (FAEA).
Many members of DATA
are practicing artists. The organization
sponsors two shows per year: The Fall Thematic
Show and the Spring Art Show, which is a juried
exhibit.
