Comprehensive Blueprint for Reading
Through extensive research
and editing, this DRAFT of Blueprint
for Reading has been compiled as an explicit framework
to support teacher content knowledge in reading, provide
effective reading and instructional strategies, and to
align standards, curriculum, and effective practices.
Following you will find the
Table of Contents that will guide you to sections of the
Blueprint that are most valuable to you.
Everyone should review the
Introduction, which includes the following
sections: How to Use the Blueprint, DCPS Core
Beliefs and Theory of Action, a Vision for Reading and
Writing in DCPS, and the Workshop Model of Instructional
Delivery for Elementary and Secondary Schools. This is
followed by the Core Reading Curriculum for each grade
from Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The
document also includes a Cross Content Reading section,
References, Glossaries, and Appendices. Because
the Blueprint is electronic, you may access the sections
that interest you most. Following are some
suggestions.
For
Teachers: Reading the
introduction provides important information and provides
quick access to useful resources. If you are a
teacher of one grade level, you may wish to open, read,
and/or print
your grade level section.
This resource draft will not only include the Common
Core Reading Standards, but also the Next Generation
Sunshine State Standards that are aligned. Each
standard has both reading and instructional strategies
you can use, as well as criteria for evidence of
effective reading abilities. The
Glossaries provide you
access to terms and strategies mentioned in your grade
level Blueprint section. The glossaries will not
only define the strategies, but also provide Internet
links to give you immediate access to additional
resources and videos for instruction of the strategies.
The
Appendices offer
specialized areas of education that may also support
your work.
For
Parents: Reading the
Introduction will provide you with foundational
information about the DCPS Reading programs. If
you have a student in fourth grade, for instance, you
may only be interested in opening, reading, and/or
printing
your child’s grade level
section. This resource draft includes the
state standards that show the grade level expectations
for your child. With each standard listed, there
are both reading and instructional strategies that your
child’s teacher may be using in class and that YOU also
may use at home with your child. To do this, you
will want to refer to the
Glossaries of reading and
instructional strategies at the end of the Blueprint for
additional help. You can open links on the
Internet for each strategy to get further information
and to see videos about the strategies.
Appendix A – Parent /Community Reading Links
will be a most valuable resource for you as you work
with your child. Your reading involvement in your
child’s life from birth through adulthood is the single
most important factor in your child’s long-term success!
For
Community Members: Reading the
Introduction will provide you with foundational
information about the DCPS Reading programs.
Following that are the
Core Reading Curricula
from Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.
The
Glossaries and
Appendices will further
broaden your understanding of reading instruction in
Duval County public schools. Because the Blueprint
is electronic, you may access the sections that interest
you most. Through the
Superintendent’s
Reading Initiative, we hope that YOU will become an
active participant in helping our children become
proficient readers and productive citizens.
