superintendent's reading & mathematics academies
In addition to the traditional summer school options offered to Duval County
public school (DCPS) students in grades 1-12, we will also offer several
FREE Superintendent's Reading & Mathematics Academies for
elementary, middle and high school students students who attend Turnaround and
Correct II schools.
If your child attended one of the schools listed on the attached
Parent Information
Guide, then he/she is eligible for one of the five summer academies.
Primary Reading Academy
This four-week program is available to students currently in kindergarten, first
or second grade and who scored at "High Risk" on DIBELS. Students will work on
strategies focused on the building blocks of reading. This program is not for promotion.
Reading & Mathematics Academy
This six-week program is for students who have been promoted to grades 3-5 but
scored a Level 2 in FCAT Reading or Level 1 or 2 in FCAT Mathematics. Students
will be engaged in a rigorous standards-based reading (three hours) and mathematics
(three hours) program each day. Criteria required include mandatory attendance, benchmark
testing and successful completion of assignments.
Superintendent's Bridge Academy
This six-week program is for students who have been promoted to 6th grade or 9th grade, but has
scored Level 1 or 2 in FCAT Reading and/or FCAT Mathematics, this 6-week is for you. This "bridge"
program will support enhancement of the required reading and mathematics skills to be successful in
a new middle or high school environment. Grade 6 students will be housed at a middle school. Grade
9 students will attend 3 weeks at a middle school and the last 3 weeks on a high school campus.
Criteria required include mandatory attendance, benchmark testing, and successful completion of
assignments.
DCPS, FCCJ and Bethel Baptist Church Summer Intervention Academy
This six-week program is for high school students who need to recover a one-credit course and have
scored at FCAT Level 1 or 2 in reading, mathematics or science. Students attending one of the 11 DCPS
Title I high schools are eligible. DCPS, Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ), and Bethel
Baptist Institutional Church will partner in offering this unique, structured learning environment to
support high school credit recovery in English, mathematics, science or social studies courses. FCAT
support for students in grades 9 and 10 is also available. Students may attend FCCJ and Bethel sites
for rigorous classroom work with a highly qualified teacher for a four-hour block.
Superintendent's College Bound Academy
This six-week program is for current 12th grade students and upcoming 11th and 12th grade students who
have not passed FCAT Reading or FCAT Mathematics. Students will receive extensive ACT/SAT preparation
with three weeks of reading and three weeks of mathematics. The district will pay for ACT/SAT tests in
early fall for those who complete the program. The district will also provide (at no cost for each
student who completes the course) a one-year subscription to ACT/SAT Online.
