Contact: Kathleen Bowles
The Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP), which is a model defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), consists of eight interactive components designed to address and promote the well-being of youth through a systemic effort among all stakeholders. The eight components of CSHP are: Health Education; Physical Education; Health Services; Nutrition Services, Counseling, Psychological, & Social Services; Healthy School Environment; Health Promotion For Staff; and Family/Community Involvement.

The Florida School Health Services Act 1973 {FL Statute 381.0056 (5) (a)} established School Health Advisory Committees (SHAC) as “an advisory group composed primarily of school, health, and community representatives who act collectively to advise the school district on aspects of child health as defined by the CSH model” (CDC). In 2006, the capacity and scope of each SHAC was expanded to include members who represent the eight components of CSHP as defined by the CDC. The SHAC assists local health and education programs in planning services to meet the intent of the law and reflect community values.
Duval County’s SHAC meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 in a conference room at the School Board Administration Building. The entire SHAC meets from 1:00 – 2:00 and then subcommittees meet from 2:00 – 3:00. Additional meetings are called as needed. The SHAC advises the School Board on issues and concerns related to all aspects of Coordinated School Health and reports, at a minimum, yearly to the School Board.
