The mission of the Physical Education Program in Duval County Public Schools is to provide students with the opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge, motivation, and behaviors that lead to the adoption of a physically active and healthy lifestyle.

The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) defines physical education as, “the development and maintenance of skills related to strength, agility, flexibility, movement, and stamina; the development of knowledge and skills regarding teamwork and fair play; the development of knowledge and skills regarding sound nutrition and physical fitness as a part of a healthy lifestyle; and the development of positive attitudes regarding nutrition and physical activity as a component of personal well-being.”

Physical Education program outcomes will include: (a) instruction in a variety of motor skills that are designed to enhance the physical, mental, and social/emotional development of every child; (b) fitness education and assessment to help children understand, improve and/or maintain their physical well-being; (c) the development of cognitive concepts about motor skill and fitness; (d) opportunities to improve their emerging social and cooperative skills and gain a multi-cultural perspective; and (e) the promotion of regular amounts of appropriate physical activity now and throughout life.

The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) states that, “It is the unique role of quality physical education programs to develop the health-related fitness, physical competence, and cognitive understanding about physical activity for all students so that they can adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles. Today’s quality physical education programs are important because they provide learning experiences that meet the developmental needs of youngsters, which help improve a child’s mental alertness, academic performance, readiness to learn, and enthusiasm for learning.”

High quality K-12 physical education programs include the opportunity to learn, meaningful content, and appropriate instruction.

Governor Crist has recently signed into law a requirement for 150 minutes per week of physical education in Florida elementary schools. This law also requires physical education instruction at the middle school. At the high school level, a 1-credit course, entitled H.O.P.E (Health Opportunities through Physical Education) has become the graduation requirement.

Duval County Public Schools strives to meet the demands of 21st century physical education and to contribute to the fight against childhood obesity in Duval County.
