The Night-Time Substance Use Prevention
Counseling Education Program is an alternative program available to
students and their parents who have committed a 3.00 (Alcohol) or 3.01
(Drugs other than Alcohol) violation against the Code of Student
Conduct. This program is conducted at Sandalwood High School on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. continuously
throughout the school year. The student and a parent(s) or guardian(s)
must attend and participate in all twelve sessions. Upon completion of
the program, parents and students receive certificates and
notification is sent to the home school and to the State Attorney’s
Office, if applicable. Based on the belief that adolescents and their parents can be taught to empower the family structure, the program is tailored to utilize the known dynamics of both individual and group development and family interaction. Activities are utilized which address risk factors while strengthening protective factors. Activities involve parents interacting as a group, while students participate together in a separate setting. Opportunities are also provided for joint communication and exchange of ideas, feelings, and concerns. According to follow-up data collected on students who participated in the program, the current success rate of the program is 92%. The objectives of the program are to: 1) learn the effects of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs (ATOD) and addictions on individuals, families, and society; 2) gain drug specific information; 3) recognize the signs and symptoms of ATOD use and addiction; 4) expand and strengthen communication skills; 5) develop an expanded list of alternatives to drug use or addictive types of behaviors; 6) identify available community resources; and 7) develop insight into oneself so as to become more responsible for one’s own behavior. To enroll a student into the program, the school administrator needs to contact Kathy Cobb (Pager # 558-3709) at Sandalwood High School, 646-5100, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and at Landmark Middle School, 221-7125, on Tuesday and Thursday. Parents must have an appointment for intake prior to starting the program. |
