Sunshine Math is an
enhancement program run by volunteers for grades
K-8, and provides an extra challenge for
self-motivated students in mathematics.
It is an optional program dependent upon
adequate volunteer assistance, and is not
available at every school. Volunteers
manage the program with the assistance of school
staff. The program runs for
approximately 25 weeks. A weekly activity
sheet is distributed and worked on by the
students independently. The successful
completion of worksheets is tracked and
incentives are often provided to encourage
participation. Program specifics can also
vary from school to school depending upon
volunteer and business partner resources made
available to the school.
The objective of the program is to expand a
student’s interest in independent thinking,
teach responsibility, and develop critical
thinking skills. It also provides
opportunities for community and parent
volunteers to provide academic enrichment that
otherwise would not be available. The
program is not meant to replace any aspect of
school curriculum. Each year,
students from participating schools are sent to
the district’s competition.
Each school sends one student from grades 1-5.
Each school is sent specific information on the
year’s competition which is held in May.
