“Celebrate Literacy Week!” is scheduled for the
week of January 23-27, 2012. The goals of “Celebrate
Literacy Week!” are to promote literacy by raising
awareness of the programs and projects offered by Duval
County Public Schools and the FLDOE, and most of all, to
promote the enjoyment of reading for children and adults
of all ages.

- Read It Forward Jax!: In collaboration with Duval County Public Schools, community agencies across Jacksonville have partnered to "pay forward" the love and enjoyment of reading with one another across the city. The Superintendent has asked that everyone "pay forward" the positive impact of literacy and create a conversation of at least three others by asking, "What are you reading?"
- Look Who's Reading: Read It Forward Jax! website showcase a local "celebrity," such as the Mayor, Sheriff, Jacksonville Jaguars' football player, etc. reading found

- Read It Forward, Jax! Superintendent's Super 6 Reading Strategy of the Month: PowerPoints and resources will be provided to all schools for effective reading comprehension strategy instruction.
- This Day in Literacy: Through the DCPS' News You Can Use, schools will receive electronically an historical literacy event from
readwritethink.org that they can incorporate into their daily instruction during each day of this week.
- Superintendent's Book of the Month is provided to all DCPS schools. Students keep a record of 25 books they've read.
- In a School Near You: District administrative staff will support one of our schools Celebrate Literacy Week events by visiting and participating in a school near them.

- Take the Lead and Read: DCPS will join other Florida schools for the Million Minute Marathon. DCPS schools will submit their minutes to the district to contribute to the state's 20 million minute goal!
- Read It Forward Jax! Family Literacy Night will be hosted at 11 different Chick-fil-A sites to promote the enjoyment of reading by having the Superintendent, School Board members, principals, police officers and firefighters read aloud to visiting families. Extension activities will be provided and gift baskets with family literacy materials will be given as prizes. Book donations also will be accepted.

- We're ALL Readers: District staff will visit participating schools and read with a class of students during their literacy week daily event.
- Duval County Spelling Bee will include the top 20 finalists from Duval County's public and private schools to compete for the county bee. The winner will advance to the Regional Bee in Jacksonville!

- Read It Forward, Jax! PreK: A community launch of the collaboration between the Duval County Public Schools and the Early Learning Coalition of Duval to help ensure Jacksonville's children are have a foundation for early literacy and school success.

- Check It Out: Students check out books from the school or public library using Celebrate Literacy, Florida!

- Nestle and the News: Each district employee housed at the central office will receive a cup of hot cocoa and the morning newspaper, The Florida Times-Union.
