Q:

What languages are offered in Duval County?
A: American Sign Language (ASL), French, German, Latin, and Spanish

Q:

Does the district offer language instruction at the elementary level?
A: Yes. Currently Martin Luther King Elementary, Chets Creek Elementary and R.L. Brown Elementary offer Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) programs in Spanish. John E. Ford K-8 School offers a Spanish immersion program.

Q:

How many years of foreign language study is necessary for graduation from high school?
A: If a student opts for the 18-credit graduation plan, s/he must complete the equivalent of two years of the same foreign language. For the traditional 24-credit diploma, no foreign language study is required.

Q:

How many years of foreign language study is necessary for college admission?
A: Most Florida colleges and universities require a minimum of two years of the same foreign language but preference is often given to those students who have studied three years or more of a language.

Q:

Can a student take American Sign Language (ASL) in place of a foreign language?
A:  The State of Florida does recognize ASL as a foreign language credit that fulfills the two-year requirement of the 18-credit diploma as well the minimum two-year requirement for college admission. However, some out-of-state colleges and universities may not accept ASL course for foreign language credit.

Q:

Can a student who is proficient in a second language waive the two-year requirement?
A: Yes. Currently a student who wishes to waive the two-year foreign language requirement may do so by demonstrating proficiency through one of the approved methods as outlined in the Bright Future’s Scholarship Program.

Q:

Can a student earn high school credit for foreign language classes taken at middle school?
A: No. A student cannot earn high school credit in middle school, however, a student who successfully completes level I of a foreign language in the 8th grade can be placed into level II of the same language in high school.

Q:

Is it possible for Duval County students to take an on-line foreign language course?
A: Yes. Currently the Florida Virtual School offers classes in Latin and Spanish.
