World Language Events for Duval County Students 2009-2010
OKTOBERFEST – Celebration of German
Culture – fall 2010 Location to be announced.
German students attend festive dinner at the German
Schnitzel House (Hodges location), the end of
September. This event will be initiated in the fall of
2009.
German Film and Cultural Event - at Five Points Theatre
on November 11, from 5 - 8:30 PM.
Justo Lamas Concert – Date
and Location to be announced
Etienne French Concert – Date and Location to be announced
French Film Festival – The University of Northern
Florida – dates to be announced in the fall. High
School French students may attend this film series free
of charge.
La Semaine de Francais – French
week – French students enjoy different activities daily
to celebrate French language and culture – First week in
November.
Celebration of China – February 6,
2010 – Mandarin Oaks Elementary School.
DCPS Chinese contest and cultural celebration. Students
from the Chinese classes compete in oral and written
activities. Musical presentations and student-created
exhibits. Teachers will also present unique aspects of
Chinese culture. Eggrolls served to all participants.
Regional Latin Forum – January
2010- A variety of competitions hosted by rotating
public and private schools.
World Language Week – 1st
week in March 2010 Languages and cultures of the world
are highlighted with special programs at individual
schools.
La Conferencia de
Español del Estado de la Florida – Florida State Spanish
Conference – April 2010 – Orlando. Spanish
language events and competitions – native costumes,
entertainment, skits, speeches and essay contests.
World of Nations – Celebration of
the global world held annually in the spring at
Metropolitan Park.
Fourth Annual Statewide Chinese
competition – March 2010 – location and exact date to be
determined.
Congrès – State of Florida French
competition – Orlando – April Recitation, dictation,
speaking, reading comprehension and French civilization.
Students also present skits, participate in a Brain
Brawl and create albums representing their year-long
activities.
Sabado Gigante – local competition
for Spanish students in North-east Florida. Reading
comprehension, speaking, writing, grammar and culture.
Students also compete in a Brain Brawl and banner
contest. Location to be determined – March
FASG (Florida Association of
Students of German) – State German Competition –
Proficiency based format with each student participating
in at least 2 contests – speaking, reading, writing,
grammar, culture and poetry. Brain Brawl, plays,
Spelling Bee, banners, scrapbooks and costumes. When:
April Where: Daytona
Asian American Pacific Heritage
Month – May. Restaurant selected annually – Annual
dinner at which 7 outstanding students are awarded JAAS
Scholarships.
