Florida Constitution states:
The education of children is a fundamental
value of the people of the State of Florida.
It is, therefore, a paramount duty of the
state to make adequate provision for … a uniform,
efficient, safe, secure, and high quality system of free
public schools that allows students to obtain a high
quality education ….
DCPS Successes
- Duval County Public Schools has
earned a district grade of “B” for the
last three years and for four of the
last five years.
- According to a recent study, DCPS
spends a higher percentage of our
PreK-12 Operating Expenses on
Instruction than other large districts
- 2nd in the state in the percent of
graduates completing at least one AP,
IB, AICE or Dual Enrollment course.
- 5th in the state in the percent of
graduates taking the SAT.
Budget Challenges
Duval County Public Schools has had to cut more than
$150 million from our budget over the past four years.
Cost cutting initiatives have included:
- District Staff cuts;
- Secondary Schedule change (shorter
days and fewer classes);
- School consolidations;
- Reduction in travel
- Reduction in transportation,
including an increase in the walk zone
to schools from 1.5 miles to 2;
- Hiring freeze
- No compensation for cell phones
Possible Budget Reduction
Strategies
- Cutting all Magnet transportation
- Cutting all supplements for
extracurricular activities, including
sports, band and other clubs.
- Reviewing the possibility of a
four-day school week*
- Cuts to employee benefits*
- Furlough all DCPS employees (Leave
without pay)*
- Eliminate Art, Music and P.E.
at the Elementary level
- Employee benefit reductions

at 6 p.m.:
- April 7 – Andrew Jackson High
School
- April 11 – Ed White High
School
Florida is 50th when compared to income in
total revenue for public education and we have the
lowest administrative costs of any state.
