Meeting Information

Meetings will occur four (4) times per year. Everyone in attendance at the November 13, 2006, inaugural meeting and all persons who expressed an interest in becoming members of the Council will be notified of the next regular meeting. The notification will include date, time, place, and a proposed agenda.

All meetings take place in the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Board Room, 4th floor of the Wachovia Building

Previous Speakers:

  • Cal Jackson, a Senior Diversity Practitioner at Blue Cross Blue Shield of FL. Mr. Jackson will discuss the “Pet Syndrome” theory. The premise is based on dominate and subordinate positions which exist in our society. As well as discuss the Syndrome’s impact on educators, parents and students in Duval County.
  • Emily Rokosch, Director of Student Support Services and Community Relations with JASMYN. Ms. Rokosch spoke about programs specifically designed to support high school students and about resources available to help school administrators, counselors and teachers combat bullying and create a safe environment for all students.
  • Melissa Witmeier, Director with Adolescent Suicide Awareness & Prevention (A.S.A.P.) and Cheryll Hall, DCPS Health Education, presented QPR Suicide Prevention Training. Participants learned how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to get help.
  • Dr. Eddie Collins, retired professor from UNF. Dr. Collins led a workshop designed to engage individuals from the perspective of Invitational Education - a theory that centers on four guiding principles: respect, trust, optimism and intentionality.
  • Bailey Cato, a program director with Teach For America. Ms. Cato discussed Teach For America and its commitment to strengthening our efforts to promote diversity and understanding, helping our students attain academic success, and creating a safe and supportive learning environment for our students.
  • Charlene Taylor-Hill, Executive Director of the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission. Ms. Taylor-Hill conducted a mock Study Circle Dialogue that allows open and honest discussion about racism and race/ethnic relations
  • Lisa Buggs, the Director of Community Outreach for the Jacksonville Children's Commission. Ms. Buggs addressed the disparities in lifestyles, opportunities and outcomes for children of different races living in Jacksonville.
  • Ben Warner, the Deputy Director of the Jacksonville Community Council Inc. (JCCI). Mr. Warner discussed the current status of race relations in our schools and community.
  • Cal Jackson, a Senior Diversity Practitioner at Blue Cross Blue Shield of FL. Mr. Jackson provided information on how to attain and retain the best employees of all ages, and also better understand our ever-changing student body.
