Priority One for Dedicated Magnet Schools
(review of the District’s process)

·         Monday - April 19, 2010 Paxon MS cafeteria

·         Tuesday - April 20, 2010 1701 Prudential Drive Cline Auditorium

The purpose of these meetings will be to provide data and information about the current process of assigning Priority One within the magnet lottery to those students who are eligible.  Generally speaking, these are students who live in the former attendance area of a Dedicated Magnet School.  Please note: The practice of assigning Priority 1 to dependents of active duty military personnel is not included in this discussion as it is mandated via state statute.

Both meetings will cover the same topics and material.  You can choose to attend either meeting.  Everyone is encouraged to attend for information, and to provide feedback.

Magnet Long Range Plan Information

The District is working on a Long Range Plan for providing and managing Magnet Programs in Duval County.

Currently the District has a nationally recognized set of 84 Magnet Programs in 55 schools throughout the county.  These programs span Elementary, Middle and High School and while magnet schools are just like other Duval County Public Schools – there is one big difference.  Each school emphasizes a particular area of study, giving its students new insight and more opportunities to explore what interests them most.

The Magnet Long Range Plan will focus on meeting the four School Board Goals related to magnet programs which are:

  1. To promote and maintain diversity

  2. To provide a unique or specialized curriculum or approach

  3. To improve achievement for all students participating in the magnet school or program

  4. To stabilize student assignment (e.g. balance the utilization of schools)

The Magnet Long Range Plan process will review how we are doing and help us plan where we will be going with magnet programs over the next few years.  (click here for a link to the “Magnet Fact Pack” which outlines the process and provides background information).

This is an exciting opportunity for you to engage with the District and help develop ideas for the future.
