Renewal of Professional
Teaching Certificates
Every five
years certificated personnel must renew their
Professional Teaching Certificate. This process is
called recertification. All Professional Teaching
Certificates are valid for 5 consecutive years. During
that five year period you may take courses through
Professional Development, institutions of higher
learning, independent studies, etc. to accumulate the
number of points you will need to renew for the next 5
year period.
he purpose of instructional
personnel certification is to provide evidence that
educators in the State of Florida are professionally
qualified in order to protect the educational interests
of students, parents, and the public at large.
Duval County Public Schools
employees must submit an application form for
certificate renewal. These applications are available in
the Professional Development Department located on the
3rd floor of the Team Center.
The following general guidelines
are provided to assist you in preparation of your
certification renewal:
- Six (6) semester hours of
college credit or 120 Master Plan Points must be
earned during each renewal period to renew your
certificate. See information below for retaining all
subjects on your certificate.
- Renewal requirements must
be completed during the validity period of the
Professional Certificate and prior to expiration of
the Professional Certificate. It is the
responsibility of each applicant to
obtain current information regarding renewal
requirements from the District's Professional
Development or Certification Department.
- The application form and
appropriate fee must be submitted during the last
year of the validity period of the certificate and
prior to the expiration of the Professional
Certificate. However, the renewal application may be
submitted after expiration of the Professional
Certificate if the following criteria are met:
- Appropriate renewal
requirements are completed prior to expiration
of the Professional Certificate, and
- Renewal application
form, application fee, and $30.00 late fee are
submitted to Duval County Public School's
Professional Development or Certification office
prior to July 1 of the year following expiration
of the certificate.
