Terms
Explanation or definition of commonly used terms. For in-depth explanations of these terms/programs, please click here to read the Duval County Public Schools Dropout Prevention Plan.

Alternative Education Alternative Education refers to the array of programs provided by the school district to either help students remain on track towards a traditional high school graduation or programs designed to offer an alternative track towards high school graduation for academically at-risk students.
Dropout Prevention Dropout Prevention programs are designed to provide at-risk students with programs designed to either accelerate their progression through the grade levels or to provide students with an alternative track through to high school graduation. It is important to note that all alternative education and dropout prevention programs adhere to the need for students to meet high academic performance standards. However, the delivery of instruction may be performed in a more flexible, non-traditional manner.
GEAR Up GEAR UP is a federally-funded program at Lee and Ribault High Schools. The goal of GEAR UP is to increase the awareness of and readiness for post-secondary educational opportunities for students. Students participate in tutoring, mentoring, academic counseling, college tours, and summer programs on university campuses.
Graduation Initiative

The Graduation Initiative Program for Dropout Prevention is designed to award a Duval District High School Diploma to potential dropout students who are overage and who have not been successful in earning credits required for graduation. Students must pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test/Sunshine State Standards )FCAT/SSS) and the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) test.

The goal of the Graduation Initiative is to help potential dropout students pass the FCAT and GED, earn a district high school diploma and develop a post-high school life path.

LEAP Forward

LEAP Forward is a personalized grade recovery program providing middle school students with small-group instruction, one-to-one instruction, and self-paced, computer-managed diagnostic and prescriptive course work to assist in them in quickly mastering standards.

The goal of LEAP Forward is to personalize the educational process for at-risk students, improve academic achievement and increase the likelihood that participating students will remain in school, attend high school and graduate with a standard diploma.

Safety Net Programs The school district offers a variety of programs before, during, and after school to ensure that students stay on track with their peers and not fall behind in their academic studies. Students receive individualized assistance in an extended session of academic assistance. The TEAM UP and ALC-Credit Recovery programs are two examples of district safety nets.
Standards-based Promotion

Standards-based Promotion (SBP) is designed to assist students in grades six - eight who have been retained at least once and are eligible to attend extended classes in math and/or language arts.

The goal of SBP is to personalize the educational process for at-risk students to increase their probability of success. Through SBP, participating sixth and seventh grade students have the chance to accelerate and attain a more grade-/ age-appropriate level of placement during the school year or at the end of the program year. For eighth grade students, the goal is for participating students to acquire skills and master standards needed to move on to high school.

STAR

Students Taking Academic Responsibility - This one- to two-year program provides innovative and specific instruction for students identified in grades two - five who are overage due to retention.

The goal of STAR is to remediate academic deficiencies, provide students an opportunity to master the standards and to bring participating students up to assigned grade level and allow them to "catch up" to their kindergarten peers.

Sixth Grade Immersion The Sixth Grade Immersion program serves sixth grade students who are in need of remediation. It primarily uses a directed learning approach, but instructional strategies also include diagnostic/prescriptive teaching, computer-assisted instruction, whole group and small group instruction, cooperative learning techniques, and multimedia instruction.
Pre-Graduation Initiative

The Middle School Pre-graduation Initiative Program for Dropout Prevention is designed for students in grade 6 - 8 who are at least 15 years of age or older and have not been successful in the traditional classroom environment. Most students in this program will participate in the Middle School Pre-Graduation Initiative for one year then spend one year in the High School Pre-Graduation Initiative program.

The High School Pre-Graduation Initiative Program for Dropout Prevention is designed for students who are at least 16 years of age or older and have not been successful in earning the credits required for graduation and are overage for grade due to retention.

The goal of this program is to improve students' basic skills in reading/language arts and math through intensive reading and math classes to the point where students are able to move on to the Graduation Initiative program (must be at least 17 years old), score at the 7.0 Level on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), and earn a district high school diploma through successful completion of the FCAT and GED testing.
