DCPS' Walk@Work
Day
Duval County
Public Schools’ employees are busy people! Between work
and other commitments, there is often little time for
exercise. That’s why DCPS Walk@Work Day, in
conjunction with the first annual National Walk@Lunch
DaySM,
is designed to compliment, not compete with, your busy
lifestyle. This program was created to increase
personal health and decrease the costs of health care
for employers and employees. On Wednesday, April 18,
National Walk@Work Day will encourage employees to take
steps towards better health.
Participation is easy. Wear
comfortable shoes on Wednesday, April 18, and
participate in our company-sponsored walk at lunch time
or any time throughout the day. The walk will not only
provide a good chance to exercise, but it will also be
an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of
walking each day.
National Walk@Lunch Day is an
extension of WalkingWorks®,
a Blue company program created to help consumers live
healthier lives and reduce unnecessary medical costs due
to physical inactivity. The WalkingWorks program was
developed with the Presidents Council on Physical
Fitness and Sports. The United States Department of
Health and Human Services estimates the cost to treat
illness and chronic disease caused by inactive
lifestyles is nearly $1,000 for every family in America,
every year. By simply getting 30 minutes of moderate
physical activity, such as a brisk walk, at least five
times a week, one can enjoy significant health benefits,
including lowering the risk of developing or dying from
cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes
and improving the health of muscles, bones, and joints.
Physical activity is vital to the well being of
all Americans and DCPS’ Walk@Work Day is an opportunity
for DCPS employees to carve time out of their busy
schedules to exercise and build a healthier community.
Join us on Wednesday, April 18, to begin walking
towards a healthier America and a healthier you!
