DCPS Employee Inducted into the Hall of Fame
Paula Thornton, Duval County's Specialist for Instrumental Music, was inducted into the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) Hall of Fame on November 18. The Hall of Fame was created as a way of ensuring the heritage of the FBA would be passed on for generations to come. Paula became the third woman in the association's history to be honored with this distinction since the programs induction in 1990.
The FBA was created during the summer of 1936 when several bandmasters from around the state were asked to assist in a course that worked with high school band directors to improve instrumental music programs in Florida. The mission of the FBA is to promote and support band programs in the state by providing opportunities for in-service growth, program evaluation and student performance.
Paula has been a member of the FBA since 1978 and served as its president from 2004 through 2006. Paula joined the DCPS team in 2007 after being invited by Ken Williams, Dean of Integrated Arts. Paula's 29 years of experience as a Florida band director made her the perfect candidate to fulfill the requirements of this challenging position. Her ability to successfully go in and turnaround band programs throughout the state made her the ideal person to lead the district's instrumental music program.
Congratulations to Paula for receiving this distinguished designation.
