Your Athletes for a 2007 SAMMY Award
America’s Milk Processors and USA Today are
gearing up for
the 10th Annual Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache
of the Year (SAMMY) Award Program. This program
recognizes outstanding athletes who are seniors in high
school. There will be 25 winners who will be awarded a
$7,500 college scholarship, invitation to a weekend at
the Disney World Complex, and the opportunity to be
pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache
advertisement in a June 2007 edition of USA Today

Morgan Family Science Night
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, Annie R. Morgan
Elementary School is hosting a Family Science Night
event. The event, which includes partnerships with the 4H Department,
Jacksonville Zoo, Division of Urban Forestry, and Museum
of Science and History (MOSH) is designed to show
students and parents how much fun science can be. The
event will begin with a choral performance by the
students, including "Do the Circulation" and
"Electricity" from School House Rock. Students and
parents will have a choice of several science activities
in which to participate, from viewing newly hatched
chickens to experiencing static electricity. For more

Randolph’s Sophomore Olympics
On February 16, A. Philip Randolph
Academies of Technology hosted a FCAT preparation event,
the Sophomore Olympics, where “brain versus brawn” took
center stage. Tenth grade students competed in ten
events and alternated between events which stimulated
their minds and bodies. In addition to
sessions of fun-filled brain teasers, trivia contests, plexers and bingo, there was an obstacle course (where
students were blind-folded), as well as jump rope,
limbo, and relay contests. A. Philip Randolph’s PTSA
members and Communities in Schools helped with the
event.

Professional Learning Communities
The Schultz Center for Teaching & Leadership will offer
several sessions for AP teachers, in which best
practices and new classroom strategies and styles are
shared with participants. Here is the schedule:

BCBS/Nemours
Reach Agreement
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida (BCBS) has reached a
contract agreement with Nemours Children’s Clinic. The
three year contract is retroactive to January 1, 2007.
BCBS says the deal will allow the two organizations to
continue to meet the health care needs of members in the
communities which they serve. "This was a very
difficult situation, and we regret any problems or
concerns this may have created for our members," said
BCBS' Vice President of Network Management Dr. Barry Schwartz.
A Nemours’ spokesperson says they are excited to have a
continuing relationship with BCBS.
Community
First Credit Union’s Special Programs for Educators
Community First Credit Union (CFCU) offers the following
special programs for educators. You must be a full time
teacher or administrator with an income not exceeding
$60,300 to qualify.
Teacher
97 Program:
This program includes a 97 percent loan to value
mortgage (that means only a 3 percent down payment),
available in a variety of terms, including 10, 15, 20
and 30-year fixed rate mortgages.
Additional requirements may
apply, but here are the main elements:
- Minimum borrower
contribution of 1 percent or $500 (whichever is more),
remaining 2 percent minimum down payment can be gifted
or borrowed money;
- Expense to income ratio
(the amount of your income available for a mortgage
payment; also known as the qualifying ratio) up to 45
percent*;
- Debt to income ratio also
up to 45 percent*;
- Non-traditional limited
credit history option;
- One month’s reserve can be
gifted;
- Home buyer education is
required for first time home buyers.
Teacher
100 Program:
This program includes a maximum 100 percent loan to
value mortgage (no down payment) available in a variety
of terms, including 30-year fixed rate mortgages.
Additional requirements may
apply, but here are the elements:
- Minimum borrower
contribution of 1 percent or $500, whichever is more;
- Expense to income ratio
(the amount of your income available for a mortgage
payment; also known as the qualifying ratio) up to 45
percent*;
- Debt to income ratio also
up to 45 percent*;
- Non-traditional limited
credit history option;
- One month’s reserve can be
gifted.
Teacher
2—FAMILY: (Two
unit home)
This program includes a maximum 95 percent loan to value
(5 percent down payment) mortgage for owner/occupants of
two-unit homes; Available in a variety of terms,
including 30-year fixed rate mortgages.
Additional requirements may
apply, but here are the elements:
- Minimum borrower
contribution of 1 percent or $500, whichever is more;
The remaining 2 percent minimum down payment can be
gifted or borrowed money;
- Expense to income ratio
(the amount of your income available for a mortgage
payment; also known as the qualifying ratio) up to 35
percent;
- Debt to income ratio also
up to 45 percent;
- Non-traditional limited
credit history option;
- One month’s reserve can be
gifted.

EXTREME
Health Challenge
To promote the importance of nutrition and exercise,
MicheLee Puppets, Inc. has partnered with the
Jacksonville Children’s Commission (JCC) to present
performances of the EXTREME Health Challenge puppet show
to Duval County schools. The puppet show is a 40-minute
production, which presents wacky and entertaining puppet
characters who teach students the importance of good
nutrition and active lifestyles in an entertaining and
interactive game show format. Michelee Puppets, Inc., Florida's premier puppetry arts organization, has
been providing issue-based educational theatrical
programs since 1985.

FCAT
Television Program on Comcast
On Monday, February 19, Comcast Cable aired a 30-minute
program created to inform parents and students about the
importance of preparing for the FCAT. The program also
addressed FCAT test-taking strategies for reading, math
and science. The show will re-air at 6:30 every evening
on cable channels 14 and 99 from Monday, February 19 to
Sunday, February 25. Check your local television
listings to confirm.
Nominate Kids Who Care
First Coast News (FCN) is soliciting nominations for
outstanding high school students who make a difference
in their communities. The 12 Kids Who Care program
looks beyond academic performance and highlights
volunteerism. The program seeks young people who,
through their caring, dedication and motivation, reach
out to help those in need. The deadline for nominations
is Wednesday, February 28. All award winners are taped
and featured during a newscast on FCN, as well as during
a special 60-minute program, which airs in June on WTLV
and WJXX. Click

Free
Financial Aid Workshop for High School Seniors
On Sunday, February 25, Duval County Public Schools
Guidance Department is presenting College Goal Sunday
from 1 to 5 p.m. at FCCJ's Advanced Technology Center.
Financial aid experts will be available to assist high
school seniors and their parents with completing the
federal application for financial aid. Spanish-speaking
financial aid experts will also be present to assist
students and parents. There will be raffle drawings for
free scholarships and other prizes. For more

Young Writers Awards
In celebration of Much Ado About Books, Jacksonville’s
premier annual literary festival, Duval County public
school students are encouraged to participate in the Joan Bowditch
Young Writers Awards. Preceding the festival,
which will be held on April 21 at the Prime Osborn
Convention Center, Duval County middle and high school
students may submit original work in one of three
categories — poetry, essays and short stories — for a
chance to have their work published in the community and
receive cash prizes.
Students must submit their
entries by March 15. A panel of judges comprised of
college and university educators, local writers, and
professionals from related fields will judge the
entries. Winners will be notified in early April and
recognized, along with their teachers, at the event’s
luncheon on April 21. Rules and entry forms are
available on the
Much Ado About Books web site.
Major
Areas of Interest Update
Students are now able to select their major areas of
interest through Florida’s online student advising
system, the
Florida Academic Counseling and Tracking for Students.
Eighth grade students can complete an ePersonal Planner
(ePEP), an interactive course planner based on the major
area of interests and on students’ educational goals.
Once enrolled, a student may change his or her major
area of interest the following year with no penalty.
Mayor's
Asian American Advisory Board Scholarship
The Mayor’s Asian American Advisory Board is presenting
seven, $500 scholarships to Asian American high school
seniors who plan to attend college. The award may be
used at any college/university in the nation. If you

Florida Regional Science Fair
On Tuesday, February 20, students from many Duval County
schools gathered at FCCJ’s Deerwood Campus to display
their science experiments and compete in the 52nd
Annual Northeast Florida Regional Science Fair. The
categories for this year’s science fair include
behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany,
chemistry, earth and space science, engineering,
environmental sciences, mathematics, medicine and
health, microbiology, physics, zoology and team
