Duval County Home to First Coast Regional Envirothon Winners
Students from three Duval County public schools earned honors in the First Coast Regional Envirothon competition.  The competition covered five categories: aquatics, wildlife, forestry, soil, and a current topic of alternative/renewable energy.

High school teams from public and private schools in Duval and Nassau counties worked together to tackle essay and multiple choice questions.  Paxon School for Advanced Studies won first place overall, after also winning first place in the forestry and alternative/renewable energy categories.  Fletcher High School captured third place overall, and Mandarin High School won in the soils category.  The Paxon students: Matt Hurlbert, Miles MacEachern, Het Patel, James Shupe, and Jeremy Thurne, with Austin Saffer as an alternate, will compete in the Florida Envirothon on Saturday, April 14.

Florida’s Biology Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Biology Teacher Sarah Whitcomb from Mandarin High School for being selected Florida’s Biology Teacher of the Year.  Each year, the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) identifies a biology teacher from each state who illustrates excellence in teaching abilities and experience, cooperativeness within school and community, inventiveness, initiative, and student/teacher relationships.

"Beary" Good Deeds by DCPS Employees and Students
Duval County Public Schools’ Exceptional Education and Student Services (EESS) Department hosted a Buddy Bear Drive where staff collected more than 200 bears in just two weeks to donate to cancer patients.  Since everyone in the department has been directly and indirectly affected by cancer, the staff decided to participate in First Coast News' Buddy Bear Drive.  Other caring Duval County Public Schools’ staff joined in the EESS Department’s bear-collecting mission including the Title 1 office, K-8 and high school cluster offices, and Alden Road Exceptional Education Center.

The EESS Department wasn’t the only one with a giving spirit.  Forrest High School Diversified Career Training (DCT) students, with the help of administrators, faculty, students, and business partners, also donated more than 200 stuffed bears to First Coast News' Buddy Bear Drive.  The students’ goal was 100 bears, but they surpassed their goal at 220 bears.  And, they are still receiving donations.  Some of the students traveled with Jeannie Blaylock and a news camera crew to deliver the bears to grateful recipients.  The students, and the bears, were welcomed with open arms.
